It’s like the BBC, but from Poland

Posted by: Michał In: links|p for press

I’ve recently introduced you to a new Polish cultural site aimed at the English-speaking world, and here we have another one.

This time it’s all about the latest news.

thenews.pl is run by Poland’s equivalent of the BBC World Service, Polskie Radio dla Zagranicy. It’s published entirely in English and is mainly focused on Poland or Poland-related issues.

You can also listen to English-language bulletins there and the site also offers Polish press reviews translated into English.

If you are really into all things Polish, you’ll find their micro-site on the upcoming presidential election particularly useful.

I found the new site particularly useful during the recent floods. While the BBC and most British media outlets completely ignored the disaster (American and Middle Eastern news outlets seemed to be more interested), thenews.pl had regular updates on the situation.

And just out of curiosity: HOW MANY of you are actually interested in daily news about Poland in English and is the existence of such service justified? I’d love to read what you have to say.

Thanks for writing about this!

My wife is Polish and I hear a lot about Polish news, so it’s good to be able to follow these in English – at least until my Polish gets better :)

Fantastic! My boyfriend is always casting news over his shoulder from onet.pl – he reads it everyday. I’ve had a bash but its just too advanced for me yet (am in my first year of learning!)

So, thank-you for this!

I’ve been listening to thenews.pl for sometime now as a Podcast which they make freely available, they used to do many of them but now they seem to just aggregate everything together so you get a few new items to listen to each day.

Radio Wroclove (an English language radio station in Wroclaw – http://www.radiowroclove.pl) also do Podcasts although their news out put is limited and mostly focused on Wroclaw which is fine for me as I love the city.

I already have TheNews.pl as my browser home page and I endorse your recommendation. Its particulalry good at reflecting current Polish political obsessions and perspective, which is important to me. However, the bias is not too extreme and is primarily included in the headlines: the text often corrects the ‘untruths’ given by the headline writer.

The News.pl was really interesting to read and get an overview of what is happening in Poland. However, I was appalled at the crass comments left by ‘bloggers’ in particular the article on immigration. It really lowered the tone of an otherwise excellent site. Luckily your blog doesn’t have any of these issues!

We have actually been looking for similar websites ever since our daughter found out she would be part of a US-Poland Exchange program. She is actually in Lodz right now, and will be heading to Warsaw and then Krakow. We have developed a wonderful friendship with her host family and look forward to visiting Poland ourselves someday. It is nice to get information about Poland.

She is blogging about her experience if you are interested (www.tafulton.com)
