Another week, another interesting Polish release. This time it’s the highly-acclaimed and relatively well-known to many UK folk music fans the Warsaw Village Band. In fact, they won the BBC3 World Music Award in 2004 and in September and October this year toured a few British cities and played the Musicport Festival in Bridlington.
They have just released their latest CD, called Infinity. Formed in 1997, the Warsaw Village Band (aka Kapela ze wsi Warszawa) combines traditional Polish music with other traditions and modern twists. Their Wikipedia page claims, the band was
formed as a response to mass culture and narrow-mindedness, “which in fact leads to [the] destruction of human dignity.”
Big words, but it’s difficult to disagree with such statement, isn’t it? I like their rather eclectic style and their ability to revive what’s unique about traditional music – and yet be able to appeal to international audiences. If you’re not familiar with their music, this should convince you:
